Protect yourself against TEXT spam!
If you have a phone, chances are you have received a spam
text. There’s a special form of spam text the cybercriminals use to trick
victims into willfully giving up everything from their phone number to their
Social Security number.
- Smishing (SMS phishing) is a security attack in which the user is tricked into downloading a virus or other malware onto their cell phone or other mobile device.
When you receive a smishing text message, it will likely ask
you to call a phone number, or, even worse, click on a link. This link will
take you to a fraudulent website, but meant to make you think it’s from a
reputable source such as your bank, wireless service provider or sometimes the
Internal Revenue Service. Do NOT click on a link in a text message or respond
to the text. If you provide them with personal information they can steal your
information and take full control over some of your most private accounts.
