Vision and Eyesight are two different things. Eyesight is how well we can read a chart at a given distance (i.e.20/20 vision). Vision is how efficiently and accurately the eyes work together. It includes eye-teaming, eye movement control, focusing between different distances, visual processing and eye-hand coordination. We can prescribe glasses or contact lenses to correct for eyesight. If there is a problem with the visual system, school performance and/or sport performance may suffer. Vision therapy retrains the eyes to work more effectively and efficiently. Many of the signs/symptoms of a vision-related learning disorder are incorrectly diagnosed as ADD or ADHD. A child doesn't typically complain of disorders of the visual system because they don't know any different or how anyone else's eyes are working; it is their "normal". Some common signs/symptoms that parents and teachers can look for include: headaches, sore or blurry eyes, avoidance of reading or near work, taking longer than others the same age to complete homework or assignments, using a finger or object to follow text, repeating or skipping words or lines, higher activity level than others, becoming frustrated with reading or near work. A comprehensive eye exam by a provider trained to look for these disorders is recommended if there is a concern with how a child is seeing or performing in school and with homework/reading.
