Walk with a
Doc Offers Route to Better Health
Doctors with Vibrant
Health are encouraging people to get outside and walk this spring.
Vibrant Health is joining Walk with a
Doc, a national campaign that gets doctors to host walks where people
can ask them questions and learn how to get moving in a friendly, welcoming
environment. The mission of Walk with a Doc (WWAD) is to encourage healthy
physical activity in people of all ages, and reverse the consequences of a sedentary
lifestyle in order to improve the health and well-being of the country.
Doctors at Vibrant Health have taken it upon themselves to
encourage people to get outside and walk for at least 30 minutes each day. According
to the American Heart Association, walking has the lowest dropout rate of any
physical activity and walking for as little as 30 minutes a day can have the
following health benefits:
- Reduce the risk of coronary heart
disease
- Improve blood pressure and blood
sugar levels
- Maintain body weight and lower the
risk of obesity
- Enhance mental well-being
- Improve blood lipid profile
- Reduce the risk of osteoporosis
- Reduce the risk of breast and
colon cancer
- Reduce the risk of Type 2 diabetes
Dr. Greg Miller is the physician champion who will be spearheading
this important and nationally-recognized "Walk with a Doc" program
locally.
"I want to support our patients and our community and to make
healthy lifestyle choices, and this is one of them. Get moving and finding a
way to exercise that's enjoyable," said Dr. Miller.
Walking is low impact; easier on the joints than running. It is
safe – with a doctor’s okay – for people with orthopedic ailments, heart
conditions, and those who are more than 20% overweight. In addition, research
has shown that you could gain two hours of life for each hour of regular
exercise! That quick stroll around the block seems a little more worthwhile, doesn’t it?
The "Walk with a Doc" events will begin at 8 a.m. at
Glen Park the third Saturday of each month, beginning in May. The dates are:
- May 21
- June 18
- July 16
- August 20
- September 17
- October 15
Vibrant Health is giving out free water and motivational goodies
to people who come to the first walk at Glen Park on Saturday, May 21st,
but Vibrant Health is also encouraging people to form their own walking groups.
Make walking a part of your fitness regimen. Join your doctor and
other people looking to improve their health at the next Walk with a Doc (WWAD)
event.
